Stupa of Sanchi and the History Involved

Sanchi Stupa is a Buddhist complex, famous for its Great Stupa, on a hilltop at Sanchi Town in the State of Madhya Pradesh in India. The Great Stupa at Sanchi is one of the oldest stone structures in India and an important monument of Indian history. It was originally commissioned by the emperor Ashoka in the 3rd century BCE. Its nucleus was a simple hemispherical brick structure built over the relics of the Buddha. According to one version of the Mahavamsa, the Buddhist chronicle of Sri Lanka, Ashoka was closely connected to the region of Sanchi. Sanchi Stupa is one of the finest examples of Mauryan sculpture. Sanchi Stupa is a UNESCO world heritage site since 1989. Sanchi is in Madhya Pradesh. The original structure was made out of bricks. Later on, it was covered with stone, media and the Torana (gateway). The harmika is a square railing on top of the dome/mound.
